What Are Dental Braces?

Dental braces are fixed orthodontic appliances bonded to the teeth that apply gentle, continuous pressure to gradually move teeth into their correct positions. Brackets are attached to each tooth and connected by an archwire — which is adjusted periodically to guide the teeth along their planned path of movement.

Braces remain the most reliable and versatile orthodontic treatment available. They can correct virtually any degree of crowding, spacing, or bite misalignment — including complex cases that aligners cannot handle effectively. And unlike aligners, compliance is not a factor — the braces work continuously whether the patient remembers to wear them or not.

At Smile Hub Clinics, braces are available for patients of all ages. The ideal time to start orthodontic treatment is when the issue is identified — early treatment in children often produces better results, but adults achieve excellent outcomes with braces at any age.

Types of Braces We Offer

💎
Aesthetic

Ceramic Braces

Tooth-coloured brackets that blend with the natural teeth. Less visible than metal. Same effectiveness — preferred by adults and image-conscious teenagers.

Advanced

Self-Ligating Braces

Use a sliding mechanism instead of elastic ties. Less friction, potentially faster treatment, fewer appointments. Available in metal and ceramic versions.

What Problems Do Braces Fix?

Crowded or overlapping teeth
Gaps and spacing between teeth
Overbite — upper teeth too far forward
Underbite — lower teeth in front of upper
Crossbite — upper and lower teeth misaligned
Open bite — teeth don't meet when biting
Midline discrepancy — centre lines don't match
Deep bite — upper teeth cover lower teeth excessively

Not sure which is right for you?

Both braces and clear aligners are available at Smile Hub Clinics. At your free consultation, we assess your specific orthodontic needs and honestly recommend which treatment will give you the best result. Some cases are genuinely better suited to braces; others work well with aligners. We won't push one over the other — we'll tell you what actually works for your teeth.

The Braces Treatment Process

1

Orthodontic Assessment

A full clinical examination, X-rays, photographs, and study models assess the teeth, jaw, and bite. The severity of the orthodontic problem is classified and a treatment plan with expected timeline is presented before any braces are fitted.

2

Fitting Appointment

Brackets are bonded to each tooth with a dental adhesive and the initial archwire is placed. The fitting appointment takes approximately 60–90 minutes. There may be mild soreness for 3–5 days as the teeth begin to respond to the pressure — this is normal and settles quickly.

3

Regular Adjustment Appointments

Every 4–6 weeks, the archwire is changed or tightened to continue guiding tooth movement. Progress is monitored at each visit. These appointments take 20–30 minutes and are essential — skipping them extends treatment time significantly.

4

Debonding

Once the teeth have reached their final positions, the brackets and wire are removed. The teeth are cleaned and polished. This is one of the most satisfying appointments — the final result is revealed for the first time without the braces.

5

Retention Phase

Retainers are fitted immediately after debonding — this is the most critical phase. Teeth have a natural tendency to return towards their original positions without retention. A fixed wire retainer behind the front teeth and/or a removable retainer is provided and must be worn as instructed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the right age to get braces?
There is no single right age. For children, a first orthodontic assessment is recommended around age 7–8 to identify developing problems early. Active treatment with braces typically begins between ages 10–14 when most permanent teeth have erupted. However, adults can have braces at any age — orthodontic movement is possible as long as the teeth and gums are healthy. Many adults successfully complete treatment in their 30s, 40s, and beyond.
How long does brace treatment take?
Treatment duration depends on the complexity of the case. Mild cases may complete in 12 months; complex cases involving bite correction or severe crowding may take 24 months or longer. Most teenage patients complete treatment in 18–24 months. Adult treatment sometimes takes slightly longer as bone remodelling is slower. Compliance with appointments and care instructions directly affects treatment time.
Do braces hurt?
Fitting braces is painless. For 3–5 days after each adjustment appointment, mild soreness and pressure is normal as the teeth respond to the new wire. This is managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Brackets occasionally rub the inner cheeks initially — orthodontic wax provided at fitting helps. Most patients adapt fully within the first few weeks.
Can I eat normally with braces?
Most foods are fine. Avoid hard foods (raw carrots, hard biscuits, nuts, ice) that can break brackets, and sticky foods (chewing gum, toffee, hard candy) that can dislodge wires. Cut hard fruits and vegetables into small pieces rather than biting into them directly. Soft foods are always safe. These restrictions are temporary — once the braces come off, there are no dietary limitations.
How do I clean my teeth with braces?
Cleaning with braces requires more care and time. Brush after every meal using a soft toothbrush, angling the bristles above and below the brackets. An interdental brush cleans between brackets and under the wire. Flossing requires a floss threader to pass under the wire. Fluoride mouthwash is recommended. Poor oral hygiene during brace treatment can cause white spot lesions (permanent marks) on the enamel — proper cleaning throughout treatment is essential.
Do I need retainers after braces?
Yes — retainers are essential after braces and must be worn for life. Teeth naturally drift back towards their original positions over time if not retained. A fixed wire retainer bonded behind the front teeth provides continuous passive retention. A removable retainer worn at night provides additional security. Patients who stop wearing retainers after a few years often find their teeth have shifted and require re-treatment.
