One of the most common questions patients ask when they come to us with crooked or crowded teeth is: should I get aligners or braces? Both straighten teeth. Both work. But they are not the same — and choosing the wrong one for your situation can mean slower treatment, a less complete result, or unnecessary expense.
Here is an honest breakdown from a clinic that offers both — so there is no agenda in this comparison.
What Are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays that fit tightly over the teeth. Each tray moves the teeth incrementally towards their planned final position. You wear each tray for 1–2 weeks before progressing to the next, visiting the clinic every 6–8 weeks for monitoring.
The major advantage is aesthetics — they are nearly invisible and can be removed for eating, brushing, and special occasions. At Smile Hub Clinics, clear aligners are provided by two Certified Aligners Providers — Dr. Abdullah Karamat and Dr. Athar Parvez.
What Are Traditional Braces?
Fixed braces involve metal or ceramic brackets bonded to the teeth connected by an archwire. The wire applies continuous force to guide teeth along their planned path. You visit the clinic every 4–6 weeks for wire changes and adjustments.
Braces are fixed — they work around the clock regardless of whether the patient remembers anything. This makes them more reliable in patients who might not consistently wear aligners as required. See our full Dental Braces page for more detail.
The Honest Comparison
| Factor | Clear Aligners | Braces |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Nearly invisible | Visible (ceramic less so) |
| Compliance required | Yes — 22 hrs/day minimum | No — fixed in place |
| Removable | Yes — remove to eat & clean | No |
| Eating restrictions | None — remove to eat | Hard/sticky foods avoided |
| Cleaning difficulty | Normal — remove to brush/floss | Requires extra care around brackets |
| Complexity range | Mild to moderate cases | All cases including severe |
| Treatment time | 6–18 months typically | 12–24 months typically |
| Cost | Generally higher | Generally lower |
| Best for | Adults, mild-moderate crowding | All ages, all severities |
When Aligners Are the Better Choice
Clear aligners work best when:
You are an adult or mature teenager who is disciplined about wearing the trays consistently. You have mild to moderate crowding or spacing without significant bite issues. You have professional or social circumstances where the visibility of braces would be problematic. You want the freedom to remove the appliance for eating and special occasions. You prioritise comfort and convenience over the lowest possible cost.
When Braces Are the Better Choice
Fixed braces work best when:
The orthodontic case is complex — significant crowding, severe bite issues, large extractions, or significant tooth movements that aligners cannot achieve. The patient is a child or younger teenager where compliance with removable appliances is uncertain. Cost is a significant consideration — braces are generally more affordable. The patient prefers not to think about wearing the appliance — it simply works continuously.
The honest answer most clinics won't give you
Aligners are genuinely excellent for the right cases. But they are not suitable for everyone — and some clinics push aligners regardless because the profit margin is higher. At Smile Hub Clinics, we assess your case honestly and recommend the treatment that will give you the best clinical result for your specific teeth and bite — not the one that costs more.
What About Compliance — The Most Important Variable
The single biggest factor in aligner success is wearing them consistently. Aligners must be worn for a minimum of 20–22 hours per day. Patients who wear them for 14–16 hours because they keep taking them out will have a slower result, or in some cases the teeth will not move as planned at all.
Braces require no compliance decision — they work whether the patient remembers or not. For children and some teenagers, this makes braces the more reliable choice even if aligners are technically possible.
Can You Switch from Braces to Aligners?
In some cases, yes. Patients who start with braces and want to finish with aligners can sometimes transition. This is assessed case by case. Starting with aligners and switching to braces mid-treatment is generally not recommended as it wastes the time and cost already invested in the aligner trays.
